about
Pursuing his passion for anesthesiology since 2007, Simon’s number one priority in his profession has always been to ensure the comfort and wellbeing of his patients at their most vulnerable time. Inspired and guided by the principle of lifelong learning and the microskills methodology, Simon is actively involved in training and educating the next generation. He knows that every single optimally trained and prepared physician can benefit the lives of countless patients.
Wincing in unison as yet another trainee inadvertently scraped the bronchoscope along the delicate bronchial tissue, Simon and a like-minded colleague and friend experienced their moment of realization: A more targeted and effective training method was called for to ensure the safest possible treatment.
Driven by the goal of improving both bronchoscopy training and patient safety, Simon and his colleague decided to develop a new and innovative miniaturized training world – a world where mistakes are allowed and even encouraged, and where there is absolutely zero risk to real patients. All of this would be combined with the addictive and fun aspects of modern gameplay to ensure repetition and consistency. This was the moment that Smiloscopy was born. By leveraging the power of gamification to boost learners’ self-motivation, the Smiloscopy training tool is redefining how bronchoscopy skills are acquired and retained.
Dipl.-Ing. Jakob Gebhard, Mechanical Engineer
Backed up by years of expertise in biomedical engineering, and possessing an infectious enthusiasm for innovation and technology in general, Jakob encounters every new engineering challenge with playful curiosity. His motto, „Life is a game. Play it!“ isn’t just a fun saying for him – it’s his philosophy.
Immediately recognizing its full potential, Jakob didn’t hesitate when his brother, Simon Althaus, invited him to collaborate on an innovative bronchoscopy training device. He spent many a long night fine-tuning CAD models, debugging code, and building – layer by layer – an innovative training tool.
Jakob’ s hands-on, collaborative approach skillfully turns complex ideas into working (and sometimes even playful) solutions – and Smiloscopy is tangible proof that the right partnership can spark genuine breakthroughs in healthcare training technology.
